Song analytics: the top ten tracks with plays, the 0 to 100 score and track affinity, for any artist

Song analytics in Opah reads each of an artist’s top ten Spotify tracks every 24 hours: lifetime plays, the track’s own 0 to 100 popularity score, and track affinity, the track’s share of current popularity divided by its share of lifetime plays. Above 1 a track pulls more demand than its size says; below 1 it coasts. For any artist you add, yours included.

$0.99 a month for your first 3 months on Opah Core, then $19. Cancel any time. Chartmetric is $60 a month for 10 artists; Opah is $19 for 3 or $39 for 10.

Which track is pulling, and which is coasting

Plays say how big a track is. The score says how much it is played now. Put the two together across the top ten and every track gets a ratio: this artist’s 744M-play flagship reads 0.17, a hit coasting on its history, while a 7.3M-play track reads 17.25, pulling far more demand than its size would predict. That is the track to put an ad behind.

Both inputs are Spotify’s real numbers and the ratio is defined on the page, never a made-up unit. Spotify for Artists shows plays and the score separately and never the contrast.

What a good number looks like

“The popularity is calculated by algorithm and is based, in the most part, on the total number of plays the track has had and how recent those plays are.”

Spotify developer documentation, Get Track (opens in a new tab)

So a track’s score rewards plays this week over plays last year, and a track with a high score and a small play count is the one the audience is choosing now. Affinity makes that comparable across a catalogue: 1 means a track’s current demand is in step with its size; the further above 1, the more it is under-exposed. The Playbook reads the same per artist, as plays per listener, so a deep catalogue and a one-hit catalogue sit apart.

How to read these numbers

The score lags
Spotify's own words: "the popularity value may lag actual popularity by a few days: the value is not updated in real time."
Affinity is relative
A ratio across one artist's top ten says which of their tracks is pulling. It does not compare a track to another artist's.

The other half: the ad that pushed the track

A track that starts pulling usually has a reason, and the ad gallery on the same page often has it: the ad whose link goes to that track, dated. Read the affinity spread beside the campaign timeline and the push is visible.

Questions

More on the FAQ.

Can I see streams per song for any artist?
Lifetime plays for each of the artist's top ten tracks on Spotify, read every 24 hours, so the difference between two days is the plays the track gained. Spotify lists ten tracks per artist, so the top ten is the catalogue Opah reads. Opah's list price starts at $19 a month for 3 artists.
What is track affinity?
A track's share of the catalogue's current popularity divided by its share of lifetime plays. Above 1, the track commands more demand today than its size says, an under-exposed track worth pushing. Below 1, a mature hit coasting on its plays. One artist's flagship at 744M plays read 0.17; a 7.3M-play track read 17.25.
Is the track score the same as the artist's popularity score?
Both are Spotify's 0 to 100 numbers. Spotify says the artist's score is calculated from the popularity of all the artist's tracks, and a track's from how many plays it has had and how recent they are. Opah reads both daily and never models either.
Does Opah know when a song is being promoted?
When a Spotify track or album link starts appearing in the artist's Meta ads, the artist page reads it as a release or re-push campaign in flight. A song promoted only through a link page is not seen this way, because link pages are not resolved.
Does Opah read playlist positions for a song?
No. Opah keeps a snapshot of the playlists featuring the artist and the ones listeners discover them on, not a position per track and no add or drop alerts.
